Michael is often heard on BBC Radio 2's 'The Organist Entertains'. He was honoured to play the wonderful five-manual Compton theatre organ in the Odeon, Leicester Square, for a film premiere in the presence of H.R.H. Prince Charles, and thrilled to play piano with the re-formed Mantovani Orchestra for a sell-out concert in Bournemouth’s Pavilion Theatre.
One of England's top electronic and theatre organists, Michael won the A.T.O.S. Young Theatre Organist of the Year Competition in 1980 and, in 1984, was honoured by the C.O.S. with their prestigious Ian Sutherland Award. He hasgone on to regularly give concerts throughout the U.K. and has made playing tours of Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Australia. He has worked as a celebrity concert artiste and sales demonstrator for Yamaha, Hammond and Wersi organs. Playing keyboards with The Los Palmas 6, the leading Madness tribute band, took him to Ireland and Dubai!
A great lover of swing music, Michael enjoys performing gentle jazz, either solo or with other musicians, and also has a classic Hammond organ trio.
'In the pit', Michael has played for over 30 different musicals including Blitz, My Fair Lady, Carousel, Guys and Dolls, Annie, Half a Sixpence, Kismet, Call Me Madam, As Happy As A Sandbag, Oklahoma, The Boy Friend and The Wizard of Oz, plus many popular pantomimes. He has worked as Musical Director for many summer seasons in Eastbourne, Bournemouth, Hunstanton and Blackpool, with next year the fourth he will have produced in Clacton.
Michael also plays for dances, corporate events and private functions, and has worked at many venues as a cocktail pianist, including London's Savoy Hotel. Other work includes giving private music lessons at the University of Sussex and playing the classical organ for church
MICHAEL WOOLDRIDGE CDs
Michael currently has two CDs available.
Virtualoso! featuring Michael Wooldridge playing the fabulous new Paramount 332 Virtual Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ. Michael has chosen to record over an hour of popular music in many different styles to show off just how incredibly authentic and versatile these new instruments are. The Paramount Virtual Wurlitzer consists of digital samples recorded from some of the very finest theatre organs in the world. These samples are then brought together into a computer package, which allows the user to control them from any MIDI keyboard. In this case, Michael used his touring Roland Atelier AT-15 to control the Pedals, Accompaniment and Great manuals, plus a Yamaha PSR-S900 to control the Solo manual. Remember though, all of the sounds actually come from inside the computer, just controlled by Michael from these instruments, which are not heard. The result is staggering, with players now able to sound as if they are playing one of the best Wurlitzer organs in the world, perhaps at a famous Fox Theatre or the Blackpool Tower, whilst they are actually just in their front room!
Opus One featuring Michael Wooldridge at the incredible Roland Atelier accompanied by top drummer Phil Solomon. This CD really captures the quality, fun and spontaneity of these two performers when they play live.
